Our History

StageWrite was founded in 2003 (built upon the co-founders work and study since 1999) as an organization dedicated to the use of the theatre arts to engage students who are struggling to become literate. StageWrite was first implemented at San Francisco Unified School District’s John Swett Alternative Elementary School in the Western Addition. For three consecutive years, as part of a grant from the Arts Education Funders Collaborative, StageWrite provided all students at John Swett with in-depth theatre and language arts residencies. Throughout this time, while evaluating and refining all aspects of our program, we began to realize the strength of the developing curricula and the great impact it was having on students & teachers alike. With the district’s decision to dissolve the school, the co-founders chose to actively recruit strong partnerships with new schools in order to continue the work of bringing literacy to life through theatre. StageWrite, under fiscal sponsorship with Intersection for the Arts, has successfully expanded to serve multiple school sites with our drama in residency programs and professional development workshops.
